Last week I had the pleasure of attending FAT - Fashion Art Toronto, for the first time.  Celebrating their 10 year anniversary, FAT Arts & Fashion week is a platform for inventive and contemporary expression and this year certainly did not disappoint.  Have a look at some of my favourite accessories of the week.

A few weeks back I spent the day at Eastern Market in Detroit with a good friend exploring the market and the surrounding shops.  It was one thing that I had never gotten around to doing in my lifetime spent in the Windsor/Detroit area and before I made my move to Toronto, I made a point to finally visit.  It was a perfect day, the sky was clear and the sun was shining, a rare thing it seems this summer.  While wandering we stumbled upon the curious entrance of a letterpress studio called Salt & Cedar.  Inside we met co-owners Megan O'Connell and Leon Johnson who gave us personal tour around the space and provided us with an insight into their vision.  The space was warm and inviting, not unlike their generous spirit. A must visit next time you are in the D!

how do you wear vintage? melanie

Name: Melanie Janisse

What do you do? I am a painter mostly, and I make beautiful things with Jennifer Lopez and other custom made fashion items.

Why do you love vintage? I love the uniqueness of vintage.  The quality of the hand is so predominant with older items.  I love the energy of vintage, as it holds a little bit of everyone who owned it.

Do you have a favourite piece of clothing or accessory? An Emilio Pucci skirt made for Saks, a pair of Mimi Kalman earrings with fortune tellers and brass, and a chocolate brown pair of platforms that I found at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago. (Note: The Pucci skirt is amazing!!)

What is your best recent find? I just scored a pair of purple Gucci desert boots at a thrift shop in Windsor.  I still have them, but the are for sale on my Etsy site!

store spotlight - the chief salvage co. toronto

WHO: The Chief Salvage Co.

WHAT: I really found a gem of a vintage shop this past week when I visited The Chief Salvage Co. for the first time.  This store has a stellar selection of vintage treasures and jewels displayed to have you looking every way... including up!  The owner, Cody, frequently updates the store's tumblr and instagram pages with her latest finds. So, if you're a quick draw on-line, you can secure great finds faster than you can get to the store.  This makes me happy 'cause I don't live in Toronto, but I do have 'connections' (you know who you both are!) who live up the street, who offered to be there as fast as my little fingers can text!

HOW would you describe your look? My style alternates between 1950's pinup girl and 1990's skater.  I have just as many flouncy pastel dresses as I've got plaid, flannel shirts and I love hair bows just as much as I love beanies.
