happy birthday

My Gram, Cecile Fields, celebrates her 99th birthday today. A fashionista herself, Gram has always been an important inspiration. During the late 1970s, when I was a little girl, Gram worked in Detroit. She would frequently return to Canada with neat little dresses and faux furs for me. Throughout her life, Gram made all of her own clothes, too. Her style is uniquely classic. I recall many strangers on the street complimenting her pillbox hats and those great dresses, always cut just below the knee. Much love Gram. Endless thanks for the inspiration. XO

one dress, two looks

It is important to make the most of each piece in my closet. So with that being said, I decided that it would be an interesting challenge to mix things up with this dress.

Look #1 - Floor length evening dress. Kids jean jacket. Fitted motorcycle jacket with a feminine spin. Wool knee socks. My favourite wellies. Oversized wayfarer sunglasses.

Look #2 - Floor length evening dress. Faux fur stole. Stiletto bootie.

Two looks that take this dress from day to evening in an instant.

Inspiration comes in many forms. Music happens to have a huge influence on me.

Check out the track “Someone that I used to know” by Wouten DeBacker aka Goyte featuring the stellar vocals of Kimbra.   If you haven't heard either of these artists to date…..run, don’t walk and have a listen.

gumballs

The multi-strand bauble necklace was a gift from my grandmother about 10 years ago. Just a few months shy of her 99th birthday, I may just have to 'lend' to her for the upcoming celebration!

vintage and a great seamstress

Often when purchasing vintage it is the print or the fabric of a garment that  initially inspires me.

While the fit of many finds is not always perfect, a great seamstress can change all that.

Thankfully my seamstress, Laurette, came to my rescue with this dress.

By simply taking in the arms and the bodice, this dress became a perfect fit!

1970's geometric print dress (Vintage, Regeneration, Pleasant Ridge, MI. $15) Alterations $32.

picker sisters

A huge part of my love for vintage is idea of reinventing something old and giving it a new life/purpose.

As a result, I have developed a bit of an obsession with the show "Picker Sisters".

The hosts, Tanya and Tracy share a friendship that is infectious.  Their vision is genius. Their style is bang on!

You may recongnize Tracey's boots from a prior post of mine! Nice!

us them we

When I saw this dress featured in her fashion show, I ran right over to the designer, Jennifer A. Lopez, and told her that it was mine! I walked out that night with the dress in my hand, right off the model.

I love the proportions of the the balloon sleeves contrasted by the micro-mini length.  The necklace, also her design, has the perfect hint of masculinity.  A perfectionist when is comes to design and construction, she is definitely a talent to watch.
